In December 2018, Illinois Humanities commissioned Tara Betts to write a poem commemorating the Illinois BiCentennial. We were inspired by the poem Gwendolyn Brooks wrote in 1968 to mark the 150th anniversary of statehood.
In June 2019, Tara Bett's poem was produced into a beautiful broadside—illustrated by Kiki Lechuga-Dupont, designed and printed by Candor Arts—to be given to the winners of the 2019 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards.
